Chariot Installation via Azure Marketplace
Summary
This guide walks through deploying the Chariot MQTT Server from the Microsoft Azure Marketplace as a virtual machine (VM). When deployed through the Marketplace, the Chariot license is automatically installed and activated.
⚠️ Currently, installations via Marketplace are only available for Chariot's most recent stable version. To install earlier versions of Chariot, please see either Linux or Windows installation instructions on the navigation bar to the left.
Deploy Chariot from Azure Marketplace
- Sign in to the Azure Portal: https://portal.azure.com
- Create an account if you have not done so already
- Navigate to Marketplace
- In the search bar, enter: Chariot MQTT Server
- Select Chariot MQTT Server by Cirrus Link
- Click Create
This opens the Azure VM creation wizard.

Configure the Virtual Machine
Basics Tab In the Basics step:
- Set Security type to:
Standard - Select the VM image:
standard – x64 Gen1 (Chariot image) - This image includes:
- Ubuntu Linux
- Preinstalled Chariot MQTT Server
⚠️ You cannot select a different OS image for this deployment.

CSP Subscription Requirement (If Applicable)
If your subscription was created through a Cloud Solution Provider (CSP), additional setup is required before deployment. Your CSP Tenant ID must be whitelisted by Cirrus Link. If this is not completed, the deployment will fail with a subscription error.
Steps to Obtain Tenant ID:
- Provide your Subscription ID to your CSP
- The CSP must contact Microsoft Support to retrieve the CSP Tenant ID
- Send the Tenant ID to: support@cirrus-link.com
- Cirrus Link will add it to the whitelist
- ⏱️ Allow 24–48 hours for processing
Complete the Deployment
Continue through the remaining VM wizard steps and configure:
- Resource group
- Region
- VM size
- Authentication (SSH key recommended)
- Networking
Click Review + Create, then Create to deploy the VM.

Connect to Your Chariot VM
Connect via SSH
During VM creation, you will generate or provide an SSH key pair. This key is required to access your VM.
- Locate your downloaded
.pemfile (typically in~/Downloads) - Update permissions:
chmod 400 ~/Downloads/your-key.pem - In the Azure Portal, navigate to your VM and select Connect
- Copy the SSH command or use the format:
ssh -i ~/Downloads/your-key.pem azureuser@<your-public-ip> - Run the command in your terminal
Find Your Public IP
In the Azure Portal:
- Go to your VM
- Locate the Public IP address on the Overview page
- Or use the Connect tab → Check Access
Configure Network Security (Required)
By default, only SSH (port 22) is enabled.
To access Chariot, configure inbound rules in your Network Security Group (NSG):
| Purpose | Port | Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| SSH | 22 | TCP |
| Web UI | 8080 | TCP |
| MQTT | 1883 | TCP |
| MQTT over TLS | 8883 | TCP |
To add rules:
- In the Azure Portal, open your VM
- Select Networking
- Click Add inbound port rule
- Configure each port as needed
⚠️ Without these rules, external access to Chariot will fail.
Access the Chariot Web UI
- Open a browser and navigate to:
http://<your-public-ip>:8080 - The Chariot log-in page should appear.
- Enter the default credentials:
- Username:
admin - Password:
password
- Username:
⚠️ It is strongly recommended to change the admin password after first login.

🔍 Troubleshooting
Cannot Access Web UI
- Verify NSG rules allow port 8080
- Confirm the VM is running
Login Issues
If default credentials are not accepted:
- Clear browser cache and cookies
- Refresh the page and try again
🔐 Security Notes
- Do not share your
.pemfile - Do not commit it to source control
- Delete it when no longer needed
